It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Commerzbank (ETR:CBK). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Commerzbank's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Commerzbank has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. It's good to see that Commerzbank's EPS has grown from €1.78 to €2.16 over twelve months. This amounts to a 21% gain; a figure that shareholders will be pleased to see.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Not all of Commerzbank's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers used in this article might not be the best representation of the underlying business. EBIT margins for Commerzbank remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 7.1% to €11b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are Commerzbank Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

As a general rule, it's worth considering how much the CEO is paid, since unreasonably high rates could be considered against the interests of shareholders. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Commerzbank, with market caps over €6.9b, is about €4.7m.

The Commerzbank CEO received €2.4m in compensation for the year ending December 2024. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Should You Add Commerzbank To Your Watchlist?

One positive for Commerzbank is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. To add to this, the modest CEO compensation should tell investors that the directors have an active interest in delivering the best for shareholders.
