Some Investors May Be Worried About Unisplendour's (SZSE:000938) Returns On Capital
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Although, when we looked at Unisplendour (SZSE:000938), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Unisplendour:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.067 = CN¥3.2b ÷ (CN¥85b - CN¥36b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
Therefore, Unisplendour has an ROCE of 6.7%. In absolute terms, that's a low return, but it's much better than the Electronic industry average of 5.2%.

In the above chart we have measured Unisplendour's prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you'd like, you can check out the forecasts from the analysts covering Unisplendour for free.
How Are Returns Trending?
The trend of ROCE doesn't look fantastic because it's fallen from 11% five years ago, while the business's capital employed increased by 46%. However, some of the increase in capital employed could be attributed to the recent capital raising that's been completed prior to their latest reporting period, so keep that in mind when looking at the ROCE decrease. The funds raised likely haven't been put to work yet so it's worth watching what happens in the future with Unisplendour's earnings and if they change as a result from the capital raise.
On a side note, Unisplendour's current liabilities have increased over the last five years to 43% of total assets, effectively distorting the ROCE to some degree. If current liabilities hadn't increased as much as they did, the ROCE could actually be even lower. And with current liabilities at these levels, suppliers or short-term creditors are effectively funding a large part of the business, which can introduce some risks.
The Bottom Line On Unisplendour's ROCE
To conclude, we've found that Unisplendour is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. And with the stock having returned a mere 28% in the last five years to shareholders, you could argue that they're aware of these lackluster trends. Therefore, if you're looking for a multi-bagger, we'd propose looking at other options.
