Partners Group Holding AG's (VTX:PGHN) Share Price Is Still Matching Investor Opinion Despite 27% Slump

The Partners Group Holding AG (VTX:PGHN) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 27%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 24% share price drop.

Even after such a large drop in price, Partners Group Holding's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 22.3x might still make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in Switzerland, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 17x and even P/E's below 12x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Partners Group Holding has been doing relatively well. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is Partners Group Holding's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Partners Group Holding would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 12%. Still, lamentably EPS has fallen 23% in aggregate from three years ago, which is disappointing. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 14% per year as estimated by the eleven analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 11% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why Partners Group Holding is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Partners Group Holding's P/E

Despite the recent share price weakness, Partners Group Holding's P/E remains higher than most other companies. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Partners Group Holding's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
