Examining Cashflow Against Bossard Holding's Earnings

In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.

As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.

For the year to June 2022, Bossard Holding had an accrual ratio of 0.24. Therefore, we know that it's free cashflow was significantly lower than its statutory profit, which is hardly a good thing. In the last twelve months it actually had negative free cash flow, with an outflow of CHF40m despite its profit of CHF103.0m, mentioned above. It's worth noting that Bossard Holding generated positive FCF of CHF78m a year ago, so at least they've done it in the past.

Our Take On Bossard Holding's Profit Performance

Bossard Holding didn't convert much of its profit to free cash flow in the last year, which some investors may consider rather suboptimal. Because of this, we think that it may be that Bossard Holding's statutory profits are better than its underlying earnings power. Nonetheless, it's still worth noting that its earnings per share have grown at 14% over the last three years. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly.
