It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Fortis (TSE:FTS). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

Fortis' Earnings Per Share Are Growing
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS) outcomes. So it makes sense that experienced investors pay close attention to company EPS when undertaking investment research. We can see that in the last three years Fortis grew its EPS by 6.6% per year. While that sort of growth rate isn't anything to write home about, it does show the business is growing.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. We note that while EBIT margins have improved from 27% to 29%, the company has actually reported a fall in revenue by 3.0%. That falls short of ideal.

Are Fortis Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Investors are always searching for a vote of confidence in the companies they hold and insider buying is one of the key indicators for optimism on the market. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.
Insiders in Fortis both added to and reduced their holdings over the preceding 12 months. All in all though, their acquisitions outweighed the amount of shares they sold off. So, on balance, the insider transactions are mildly encouraging. It is also worth noting that it was President David Hutchens who made the biggest single purchase, worth CA$1.3m, paying CA$52.34 per share.
On top of the insider buying, it's good to see that Fortis insiders have a valuable investment in the business. Indeed, they hold CA$31m worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. While their ownership only accounts for 0.1%, this is still a considerable amount at stake to encourage the business to maintain a strategy that will deliver value to shareholders.
Does Fortis Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One positive for Fortis is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. In addition, insiders have been busy adding to their sizeable holdings in the company. That should do plenty in prompting budding investors to undertake a bit more research - or even adding the company to their watchlists. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Fortis (of which 1 is potentially serious!) you should know about.
