Here's Why I Think Gatekeeper Systems (CVE:GSI) Might Deserve Your Attention Today
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Gatekeeper Systems (CVE:GSI), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

Gatekeeper Systems's Improving Profits
In the last three years Gatekeeper Systems's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Gatekeeper Systems boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from CA$0.017 to CA$0.021, in the last year. That's a 25% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While we note Gatekeeper Systems's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 13% to CA$20m. That's progress.
In the chart below, you can see how the company has grown earnings, and revenue, over time. To see the actual numbers, click on the chart.
Since Gatekeeper Systems is no giant, with a market capitalization of CA$51m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.
Are Gatekeeper Systems Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
As a general rule, I think it worth considering how much the CEO is paid, since unreasonably high rates could be considered against the interests of shareholders. For companies with market capitalizations under CA$253m, like Gatekeeper Systems, the median CEO pay is around CA$208k.
The Gatekeeper Systems CEO received CA$175k in compensation for the year ending . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.
Does Gatekeeper Systems Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One important encouraging feature of Gatekeeper Systems is that it is growing profits. Not only that, but the CEO is paid quite reasonably, which makes me feel more trusting of the board of directors. So all in all I think it's worth at least considering for your watchlist. We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 1 warning sign for Gatekeeper Systems that you need to be mindful of.
