LifeSpeak Inc.'s (TSE:LSPK) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 30%

LifeSpeak Inc. (TSE:LSPK) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 30% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 25% is also fairly reasonable.

Although its price has surged higher, LifeSpeak may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x, since almost half of all companies in the Software industry in Canada have P/S ratios greater than 3.3x and even P/S higher than 11x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does LifeSpeak's Recent Performance Look Like?

LifeSpeak could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, LifeSpeak would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 11%. While this performance is only fair, the company was still able to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 0.9% as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 20% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

In light of this, it's understandable that LifeSpeak's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What We Can Learn From LifeSpeak's P/S?

Shares in LifeSpeak have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of LifeSpeak's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for LifeSpeak you should know about.
