Improved Revenues Required Before LifeSpeak Inc. (TSE:LSPK) Shares Find Their Feet

You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x LifeSpeak Inc. (TSE:LSPK) is definitely a stock worth checking out, seeing as almost half of all the Software companies in Canada have P/S ratios greater than 2.9x and even P/S above 8x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does LifeSpeak's Recent Performance Look Like?

LifeSpeak hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Keen to find out how analysts think LifeSpeak's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is LifeSpeak's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, LifeSpeak would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 6.8%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 153% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 0.2% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 18%, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we can see why LifeSpeak is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What Does LifeSpeak's P/S Mean For Investors?

Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that LifeSpeak maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
