Vext Science (CSE:VEXT) shareholders are up 40% this past week, but still in the red over the last five years
Vext Science, Inc. (CSE:VEXT) has rebounded strongly over the last week, with the share price soaring 40%. But will that repair the damage for the weary investors who have owned this stock as it declined over half a decade? Probably not. Like a ship taking on water, the share price has sunk 73% in that time. It's true that the recent bounce could signal the company is turning over a new leaf, but we are not so sure. The important question is if the business itself justifies a higher share price in the long term.
The recent uptick of 40% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.
Vext Science isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
In the last half decade, Vext Science saw its revenue increase by 6.9% per year. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. So it is unexpected to see the stock down 12% per year in the last five years. The truth is that the growth might be below expectations, and investors are probably worried about the continual losses.

A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Vext Science shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 70% over one year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 12% per year over five years. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term.
