Here's Why We're Not Too Worried About Oroco Resource's (CVE:OCO) Cash Burn Situation
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, Oroco Resource (CVE:OCO) shareholders have done very well over the last year, with the share price soaring by 111%. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly.
Given its strong share price performance, we think it's worthwhile for Oroco Resource shareholders to consider whether its cash burn is concerning. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

Does Oroco Resource Have A Long Cash Runway?
A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. In May 2021, Oroco Resource had CA$20m in cash, and was debt-free. In the last year, its cash burn was CA$7.3m. That means it had a cash runway of about 2.8 years as of May 2021. Arguably, that's a prudent and sensible length of runway to have. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
How Is Oroco Resource's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Oroco Resource didn't record any revenue over the last year, indicating that it's an early stage company still developing its business. Nonetheless, we can still examine its cash burn trajectory as part of our assessment of its cash burn situation. In fact, it ramped its spending strongly over the last year, increasing cash burn by 173%. That sort of spending growth rate can't continue for very long before it causes balance sheet weakness, generally speaking. Oroco Resource makes us a little nervous due to its lack of substantial operating revenue. So we'd generally prefer stocks from this list of stocks that have analysts forecasting growth.
Can Oroco Resource Raise More Cash Easily?
While Oroco Resource does have a solid cash runway, its cash burn trajectory may have some shareholders thinking ahead to when the company may need to raise more cash. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.
Since it has a market capitalisation of CA$514m, Oroco Resource's CA$7.3m in cash burn equates to about 1.4% of its market value. That means it could easily issue a few shares to fund more growth, and might well be in a position to borrow cheaply.

It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Oroco Resource is burning through its cash.
