The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like MDA (TSE:MDA), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide MDA with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

MDA's Improving Profits

Even when EPS earnings per share (EPS) growth is unexceptional, company value can be created if this rate is sustained each year. So EPS growth can certainly encourage an investor to take note of a stock. Impressively, MDA's EPS catapulted from CA$0.15 to CA$0.37, over the last year. It's not often a company can achieve year-on-year growth of 142%. Shareholders will be hopeful that this is a sign of the company reaching an inflection point.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. While we note MDA achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 38% to CA$789m. That's progress.

Are MDA Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's said that there's no smoke without fire. For investors, insider buying is often the smoke that indicates which stocks could set the market alight. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.

It's good to see MDA insiders walking the walk, by spending CA$717k on shares in just twelve months. This, combined with the lack of sales from insiders, should be a great signal for shareholders in what's to come. We also note that it was the Independent Director, Brendan Paddick, who made the biggest single acquisition, paying CA$386k for shares at about CA$11.95 each.

The good news, alongside the insider buying, for MDA bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth CA$168m. That equates to 13% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. So there is opportunity here to invest in a company whose management have tangible incentives to deliver.
