Insiders at The GPT Group (ASX:GPT) recouped some losses this week after buying this year, still down AU$92k
Some of the losses seen by insiders who purchased AU$685k worth of The GPT Group (ASX:GPT) shares over the past year were recovered after the stock increased by 3.8% over the past week. The purchase, however, has proven to be a pricey bet, with losses currently totalling AU$92k.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At GPT Group
In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when CEO, MD & Director Robert Johnston bought AU$500k worth of shares at a price of AU$5.30 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being AU$4.34). It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock if insiders have bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price.

Insider Ownership
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that GPT Group insiders own 0.2% of the company, worth about AU$15m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
