We Wouldn't Rely On RattanIndia Power's (NSE:RTNPOWER) Statutory Earnings As A Guide

As a general rule, we think profitable companies are less risky than companies that lose money. Having said that, sometimes statutory profit levels are not a good guide to ongoing profitability, because some short term one-off factor has impacted profit levels. In this article, we'll look at how useful this year's statutory profit is, when analysing RattanIndia Power (NSE:RTNPOWER).

It's good to see that over the last twelve months RattanIndia Power made a profit of ₹1.65b on revenue of ₹17.7b. The good news is that the company managed to grow its revenue over the last three years, and also move from loss-making to profitable.

Of course, when it comes to statutory profit, the devil is often in the detail, and we can get a better sense for a company by diving deeper into the financial statements. Therefore, today we will consider the nature of RattanIndia Power's statutory earnings with reference to its dilution of shareholders and the impact of unusual items. Note: we always recommend investors check balance sheet strength. Click here to be taken to our balance sheet analysis of RattanIndia Power.

One essential aspect of assessing earnings quality is to look at how much a company is diluting shareholders. RattanIndia Power expanded the number of shares on issue by 68% over the last year. As a result, its net income is now split between a greater number of shares. Per share metrics like EPS help us understand how much actual shareholders are benefitting from the company's profits, while the net income level gives us a better view of the company's absolute size. A Look At The Impact Of RattanIndia Power's Dilution on Its Earnings Per Share (EPS).

RattanIndia Power was losing money three years ago. And even focusing only on the last twelve months, we don't have a meaningful growth rate because it made a loss a year ago, too. What we do know is that while it's great to see a profit over the last twelve months, that profit would have been better, on a per share basis, if the company hadn't needed to issue shares. And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is having a rather significant impact on shareholders.

If RattanIndia Power's EPS can grow over time then that drastically improves the chances of the share price moving in the same direction. However, if its profit increases while its earnings per share stay flat (or even fall) then shareholders might not see much benefit. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

Finally, we should also consider the fact that unusual items boosted RattanIndia Power's net profit by ₹27b over the last year. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. We can see that RattanIndia Power's positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to March 2020. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.

Our Take On RattanIndia Power's Profit Performance

To sum it all up, RattanIndia Power got a nice boost to profit from unusual items; without that, its statutory results would have looked worse. And furthermore, it went and issued plenty of new shares, ensuring that each shareholder (who did not tip more money in) now owns a smaller proportion of the company. On reflection, the above-mentioned factors give us the strong impression that RattanIndia Power's underlying earnings power is not as good as it might seem, based on the statutory profit numbers. If you want to do dive deeper into RattanIndia Power, you'd also look into what risks it is currently facing. What you have missed is that this event happened last year too. Last year the number was 21 seconds. This year it beat Bolt. That's 60% improvement in an year. Now extrapolate this in many axes of work that Robots can come and fill in. The physical productivity and AI boom is just starting.

I can't pick a company. But I can pick a person. With no doubt that's Musk. Optimus for blue collar productivity increase and xAI for white collar productivity increase. Did anyone dabble with GrokBot here?

At first glance, this was the strongest earnings season in years. But when you look at where the growth actually came from, the story splits into two very different pictures.
