IVE Group's (ASX:IGL) Shareholders Are Down 65% On Their Shares
While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the IVE Group Limited (ASX:IGL) share price up 16% in a single quarter. Meanwhile over the last three years the stock has dropped hard. Regrettably, the share price slid 65% in that period. So the improvement may be a real relief to some. Perhaps the company has turned over a new leaf.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
IVE Group saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 7.5% per year, over the last three years. The share price decline of 29% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it's likely that the EPS decline has disappointed the market, leaving investors hesitant to buy. This increased caution is also evident in the rather low P/E ratio, which is sitting at 4.61.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We've already covered IVE Group's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. IVE Group's TSR of was a loss of 58% for the 3 years. That wasn't as bad as its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
IVE Group shareholders are down 63% for the year, falling short of the market return. Meanwhile, the broader market slid about 8.7%, likely weighing on the stock. The three-year loss of 17% per year isn't as bad as the last twelve months, suggesting that the company has not been able to convince the market it has solved its problems. Although Baron Rothschild famously said to "buy when there's blood in the streets, even if the blood is your own", he also focusses on high quality stocks with solid prospects. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with IVE Group , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
