IG Design Group's (LON:IGR) Wonderful 766% Share Price Increase Shows How Capitalism Can Build Wealth
IG Design Group plc (LON:IGR) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 12% in the last week. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been spectacular. To be precise, the stock price is 766% higher than it was five years ago, a wonderful performance by any measure. So it might be that some shareholders are taking profits after good performance. Of course what matters most is whether the business can improve itself sustainably, thus justifying a higher price.
It really delights us to see such great share price performance for investors.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over half a decade, IG Design Group managed to grow its earnings per share at 21% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 54% per year, over the same period. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of IG Design Group, it has a TSR of 827% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that IG Design Group has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 22% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 56% a year, is even better. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand IG Design Group better, we need to consider many other factors.
