MTN Group Limited (JSE:MTN) Screens Well But There Might Be A Catch
When you see that almost half of the companies in the Wireless Telecom industry in South Africa have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.6x, MTN Group Limited (JSE:MTN) looks to be giving off some buy signals with its 0.8x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does MTN Group's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
MTN Group could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.
Keen to find out how analysts think MTN Group's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as MTN Group's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 11%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 9.1% in total. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the twelve analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 7.9% per annum over the next three years. With the industry only predicted to deliver 5.3% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.
With this information, we find it odd that MTN Group is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
What We Can Learn From MTN Group's P/S?
While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
A look at MTN Group's revenues reveals that, despite glowing future growth forecasts, its P/S is much lower than we'd expect. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. While the possibility of the share price plunging seems unlikely due to the high growth forecasted for the company, the market does appear to have some hesitation.
