From what we can see, insiders were net sellers in Mr Price Group Limited's (JSE:MRP ) during the past 12 months. That is, insiders sold the stock in greater numbers than they purchased it.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Mr Price Group
The Honorary Chairman & Co-Founder, Stewart Cohen, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for R42m worth of shares at a price of R213 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of R230. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was 75% of Stewart Cohen's holding. Stewart Cohen was the only individual insider to sell over the last year. Notably Stewart Cohen was also the biggest buyer, having purchased R924k worth of shares.

Insider Ownership Of Mr Price Group
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 0.8% of Mr Price Group shares, worth about R464m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
