FirstRand (JSE:FSR) Ticks All The Boxes When It Comes To Earnings Growth

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like FirstRand (JSE:FSR). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

FirstRand's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS) outcomes. So it makes sense that experienced investors pay close attention to company EPS when undertaking investment research. FirstRand managed to grow EPS by 7.1% per year, over three years. This may not be setting the world alight, but it does show that EPS is on the upwards trend.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. It's noted that FirstRand's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort our analysis of its margins. EBIT margins for FirstRand remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 12% to R115b. That's a real positive.
