Unitil (NYSE:UTL) Has More To Do To Multiply In Value Going Forward
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Unitil (NYSE:UTL) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Unitil, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.063 = US$85m ÷ (US$1.6b - US$238m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
Therefore, Unitil has an ROCE of 6.3%. On its own that's a low return, but compared to the average of 5.0% generated by the Integrated Utilities industry, it's much better.

In the above chart we have measured Unitil's prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you're interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our free report on analyst forecasts for the company.
So How Is Unitil's ROCE Trending?
The returns on capital haven't changed much for Unitil in recent years. The company has consistently earned 6.3% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 23% in that time. Given the company has increased the amount of capital employed, it appears the investments that have been made simply don't provide a high return on capital.
The Bottom Line On Unitil's ROCE
In summary, Unitil has simply been reinvesting capital and generating the same low rate of return as before. And investors may be recognizing these trends since the stock has only returned a total of 1.1% to shareholders over the last five years. So if you're looking for a multi-bagger, the underlying trends indicate you may have better chances elsewhere.
Unitil does come with some risks though, we found 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant...
