FirstEnergy (NYSE:FE) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To $0.445

FirstEnergy Corp.'s (NYSE:FE) periodic dividend will be increasing on the 1st of June to $0.445, with investors receiving 4.7% more than last year's $0.425. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 4.3%.

FirstEnergy's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. Prior to this announcement, the dividend made up 99% of earnings, and the company was generating negative free cash flows. This high of a dividend payment could start to put pressure on the balance sheet in the future.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 70.9%. Assuming the dividend continues along the course it has been charting recently, our estimates show the payout ratio being 60% which brings it into quite a comfortable range.

FirstEnergy Has A Solid Track Record

The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from $1.44 total annually to $1.70. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 1.7% a year over that time. While the consistency in the dividend payments is impressive, we think the relatively slow rate of growth is less attractive.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Although it's important to note that FirstEnergy's earnings per share has basically not grown from where it was five years ago, which could erode the purchasing power of the dividend over time. So the company has struggled to grow its EPS yet it's still paying out 99% of its earnings. As they say in finance, 'past performance is not indicative of future performance', but we are not confident a company with limited earnings growth and a high payout ratio will be a star dividend-payer over the next decade.

FirstEnergy's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. In the past the payments have been stable, but we think the company is paying out too much for this to continue for the long term. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 2 warning signs for FirstEnergy that investors need to be conscious of moving forward. Is FirstEnergy not quite the opportunity you were looking for?
