Kirby (NYSE:KEX) Is Looking To Continue Growing Its Returns On Capital
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. So when we looked at Kirby (NYSE:KEX) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for Kirby, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.074 = US$378m ÷ (US$5.8b - US$650m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
Thus, Kirby has an ROCE of 7.4%. On its own, that's a low figure but it's around the 8.4% average generated by the Shipping industry.

What Can We Tell From Kirby's ROCE Trend?
Kirby's ROCE growth is quite impressive. More specifically, while the company has kept capital employed relatively flat over the last five years, the ROCE has climbed 58% in that same time. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. The company is doing well in that sense, and it's worth investigating what the management team has planned for long term growth prospects.
Our Take On Kirby's ROCE
In summary, we're delighted to see that Kirby has been able to increase efficiencies and earn higher rates of return on the same amount of capital. And investors seem to expect more of this going forward, since the stock has rewarded shareholders with a 55% return over the last five years. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
