If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. With that in mind, we've noticed some promising trends at Costamare (NYSE:CMRE) so let's look a bit deeper.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Costamare is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.077 = US$356m ÷ (US$5.3b - US$663m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).

So, Costamare has an ROCE of 7.7%. Even though it's in line with the industry average of 7.7%, it's still a low return by itself.

How Are Returns Trending?

While in absolute terms it isn't a high ROCE, it's promising to see that it has been moving in the right direction. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 7.7%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 64% more capital is being employed now too. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at Costamare thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.

Our Take On Costamare's ROCE

And a remarkable 154% total return over the last five years tells us that investors are expecting more good things to come in the future.
