Forward Air Corporation (NASDAQ:FWRD) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 48% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been disappointing. Regrettably, the share price slid 65% in that period. Some might say the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. Perhaps the company has turned over a new leaf.

Since Forward Air has shed US$70m from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Forward Air saw its share price decline over the three years in which its EPS also dropped, falling to a loss. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!
