Air Transport Services Group (NASDAQ:ATSG) Has A Somewhat Strained Balance Sheet

So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We can see that Air Transport Services Group, Inc. Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Air Transport Services Group had liabilities of US$346.8m due within 12 months and liabilities of US$1.94b due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had US$89.6m in cash and US$227.1m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities total US$1.97b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
Given this deficit is actually higher than the company's market capitalization of US$1.36b, we think shareholders really should watch Air Transport Services Group's debt levels, like a parent watching their child ride a bike for the first time. Hypothetically, extremely heavy dilution would be required if the company were forced to pay down its liabilities by raising capital at the current share price.

Having said that, its ability to cover its interest expense with its EBIT isn't such a worry. We're quite clear that we consider Air Transport Services Group to be really rather risky, as a result of its balance sheet health. So we're almost as wary of this stock as a hungry kitten is about falling into its owner's fish pond: once bitten, twice shy, as they say.
