Corning (NYSE:GLW) Has Affirmed Its Dividend Of $0.28

Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) has announced that it will pay a dividend of $0.28 per share on the 12th of December. This means the dividend yield will be fairly typical at 1.3%.

While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that Corning's stock price has increased by 38% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

Corning's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. Based on the last payment, the dividend made up 80% of cash flows, but a higher proportion of net income. This indicates that the company could be more focused on returning cash to shareholders than reinvesting to grow the business.

Analysts expect a massive rise in earnings per share in the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 41%, which would make us comfortable with the dividend's sustainability, despite the levels currently being elevated.

Corning Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The annual payment during the last 10 years was $0.48 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $1.12. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 8.8% per annum over that time. The dividend has been growing very nicely for a number of years, and has given its shareholders some nice income in their portfolios.

Dividend Growth Could Be Constrained

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Corning has impressed us by growing EPS at 48% per year over the past five years. Strong earnings is nice to see, but unless this can be sustained on minimal reinvestment of profits, we would question whether dividends will follow suit.

In Summary

Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. In the past the payments have been stable, but we think the company is paying out too much for this to continue for the long term. We don't think Corning is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
