Risks Still Elevated At These Prices As Calix, Inc. (NYSE:CALX) Shares Dive 25%
The Calix, Inc. (NYSE:CALX) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 25%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 23% share price drop.
Even after such a large drop in price, you could still be forgiven for thinking Calix is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 2.2x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Communications industry have P/S ratios below 1.1x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How Calix Has Been Performing
Calix hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn the corner. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as Calix's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 13%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 32% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 4.7% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 10%.
With this information, we find it concerning that Calix is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. Apparently many investors in the company reject the analyst cohort's pessimism and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the negative growth outlook.
What Does Calix's P/S Mean For Investors?
Despite the recent share price weakness, Calix's P/S remains higher than most other companies in the industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Calix's analyst forecasts revealed that its shrinking revenue outlook isn't drawing down its high P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as the predicted future revenue decline likely to impact the positive sentiment that's propping up the P/S. At these price levels, investors should remain cautious, particularly if things don't improve.
