Returns On Capital At Arista Networks (NYSE:ANET) Have Stalled
Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. With that in mind, the ROCE of Arista Networks (NYSE:ANET) looks decent, right now, so lets see what the trend of returns can tell us.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Arista Networks:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.19 = US$854m ÷ (US$5.4b - US$893m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2021).
So, Arista Networks has an ROCE of 19%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 8.6% generated by the Communications industry.

What Can We Tell From Arista Networks' ROCE Trend?
While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. The company has consistently earned 19% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 290% in that time. Since 19% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
What We Can Learn From Arista Networks' ROCE
The main thing to remember is that Arista Networks has proven its ability to continually reinvest at respectable rates of return. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 414% return they've received over the last five years. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
