Neonode (NASDAQ:NEON) shareholders are up 11% this past week, but still in the red over the last five years
This week we saw the Neonode Inc. (NASDAQ:NEON) share price climb by 11%. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been disappointing. In that time the share price has delivered a rude shock to holders, who find themselves down 54% after a long stretch. Some might say the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. But it could be that the fall was overdone.
The recent uptick of 11% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.
Neonode wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
Over half a decade Neonode reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 15% for each year. That's definitely a weaker result than most pre-profit companies report. Arguably, the market has responded appropriately to this business performance by sending the share price down 9% (annualized) in the same time period. It's fair to say most investors don't like to invest in loss making companies with falling revenue. This looks like a really risky stock to buy, at a glance.

A Different Perspective
Neonode shareholders are down 50% for the year, but the market itself is up 21%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 9% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Neonode (at least 1 which is significant) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
