Here's Why MultiSensor AI Holdings (NASDAQ:MSAI) Must Use Its Cash Wisely
We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly.
So, the natural question for MultiSensor AI Holdings (NASDAQ:MSAI) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

Does MultiSensor AI Holdings Have A Long Cash Runway?
A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. In September 2024, MultiSensor AI Holdings had US$8.6m in cash, and was debt-free. Importantly, its cash burn was US$17m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of approximately 6 months from September 2024. That's quite a short cash runway, indicating the company must either reduce its annual cash burn or replenish its cash. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.
How Well Is MultiSensor AI Holdings Growing?
It was quite stunning to see that MultiSensor AI Holdings increased its cash burn by 400% over the last year. On the bright side, at least operating revenue was up 31% over the same period, giving some cause for hope. Taken together, we think these growth metrics are a little worrying. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.
Can MultiSensor AI Holdings Raise More Cash Easily?
Given the trajectory of MultiSensor AI Holdings' cash burn, many investors will already be thinking about how it might raise more cash in the future. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Since it has a market capitalisation of US$41m, MultiSensor AI Holdings' US$17m in cash burn equates to about 42% of its market value. That's high expenditure relative to the value of the entire company, so if it does have to issue shares to fund more growth, that could end up really hurting shareholders returns (through significant dilution).
Is MultiSensor AI Holdings' Cash Burn A Worry?
Even though its increasing cash burn makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought MultiSensor AI Holdings' revenue growth was relatively promising. Considering all the measures mentioned in this report, we reckon that its cash burn is fairly risky, and if we held shares we'd be watching like a hawk for any deterioration. On another note, MultiSensor AI Holdings has 4 warning signs (and 2 which are potentially serious) we think you should know about.
