Clear Secure (NYSE:YOU) Is Achieving High Returns On Its Capital
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in Clear Secure's (NYSE:YOU) returns on capital, so let's have a look.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Clear Secure is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.34 = US$102m ÷ (US$859m - US$558m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
Therefore, Clear Secure has an ROCE of 34%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 9.0% earned by companies in a similar industry.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Clear Secure Tell Us?
Clear Secure has recently broken into profitability so their prior investments seem to be paying off. Shareholders would no doubt be pleased with this because the business was loss-making four years ago but is is now generating 34% on its capital. And unsurprisingly, like most companies trying to break into the black, Clear Secure is utilizing 191% more capital than it was four years ago. This can tell us that the company has plenty of reinvestment opportunities that are able to generate higher returns.
On a side note, Clear Secure's current liabilities are still rather high at 65% of total assets. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.
Our Take On Clear Secure's ROCE
Overall, Clear Secure gets a big tick from us thanks in most part to the fact that it is now profitable and is reinvesting in its business. Given the stock has declined 20% in the last three years, this could be a good investment if the valuation and other metrics are also appealing. That being the case, research into the company's current valuation metrics and future prospects seems fitting.
