The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. On the other hand, if you find a high quality business to buy (at the right price) you can more than double your money! For example, the Q2 Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:QTWO) share price had more than doubled in just one year - up 112%. In the last week shares have slid back 3.0%. And shareholders have also done well over the long term, with an increase of 46% in the last three years.

While the stock has fallen 3.0% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

Because Q2 Holdings made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last year Q2 Holdings saw its revenue grow by 12%. That's not great considering the company is losing money. So we wouldn't have expected the share price to rise by 112%. We're happy that investors have made money, though we wonder if the increase will be sustained. We're not so sure that revenue growth is driving the market optimism about the stock.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Q2 Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 112% over the last year. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 0.8%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity.
