Cloudflare, Inc.'s (NYSE:NET) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 17.7x may look like a poor investment opportunity when you consider close to half the companies in the IT industry in the United States have P/S ratios below 1.9x. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Cloudflare Performed Recently?

Recent times have been advantageous for Cloudflare as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to persist, which has raised the P/S. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Keen to find out how analysts think Cloudflare's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

Cloudflare's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 31%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 179% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 28% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 11% per year growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Cloudflare's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

What We Can Learn From Cloudflare's P/S?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
