A Piece Of The Puzzle Missing From Veritone, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:VERI) 29% Share Price Climb

Veritone, Inc. (NASDAQ:VERI) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 29% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 22% in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, Veritone may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x, considering almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.8x and even P/S higher than 12x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does Veritone's Recent Performance Look Like?

For instance, Veritone's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Veritone?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Veritone's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 11% decrease to the company's top line. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 101% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 14% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Veritone's P/S isn't as high compared to that of its industry peers. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Final Word

Veritone's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We're very surprised to see Veritone currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to perceive a likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.
