Sprout Social, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPT) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 34%
The Sprout Social, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPT) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 34%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 31% in that time.
Although its price has dipped substantially, given about half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 15x, you may still consider Sprout Social as a highly attractive investment with its -42.1x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
Sprout Social hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Sprout Social's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 56%. This has erased any of its gains during the last three years, with practically no change in EPS being achieved in total. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to slump, contracting by 1.8% per annum during the coming three years according to the eleven analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the broader market is forecast to expand by 11% per year, which paints a poor picture.
With this information, we are not surprised that Sprout Social is trading at a P/E lower than the market. However, shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
Sprout Social's P/E looks about as weak as its stock price lately. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Sprout Social maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
