We Think That There Are Some Issues For OneSpan (NASDAQ:OSPN) Beyond Its Promising Earnings

The market shrugged off OneSpan Inc.'s (NASDAQ:OSPN) solid earnings report. We think that investors might be worried about some concerning underlying factors.

An Unusual Tax Situation

We can see that OneSpan received a tax benefit of US$8.0m. It's always a bit noteworthy when a company is paid by the tax man, rather than paying the tax man. The receipt of a tax benefit is obviously a good thing, on its own. However, our data indicates that tax benefits can temporarily boost statutory profit in the year it is booked, but subsequently profit may fall back. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal. So while we think it's great to receive a tax benefit, it does tend to imply an increased risk that the statutory profit overstates the sustainable earnings power of the business.

That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.

Our Take On OneSpan's Profit Performance

OneSpan reported that it received a tax benefit, rather than paid tax, in its last report. As a result we don't think its profit result, which includes that tax-boost, is a good guide to its sustainable profit levels. Because of this, we think that it may be that OneSpan's statutory profits are better than its underlying earnings power. But the happy news is that, while acknowledging we have to look beyond the statutory numbers, those numbers are still improving, with EPS growing at a very high rate over the last year. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. With this in mind, we wouldn't consider investing in a stock unless we had a thorough understanding of the risks. For example, we've discovered 1 warning sign that you should run your eye over to get a better picture of OneSpan.

This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of OneSpan's profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. Some people consider a high return on equity to be a good sign of a quality business. You’ve overlooked the activist investor factor. Travis Cocke’s Voss has announced 5% ownership through a 13G filing. They’ve added to that 5% since, and in doing so, have created a structural trap door for 27.42 Million Shares actively sold short. Chuck will announce lots of positives on July 29 but it’s what Voss announces shortly after that will rock the overextended Teledoc shorts. The Walmart partnership is the tip of the iceberg. The market is missing the sheer regulatory and enterprise friction of modern corporate healthcare. Teladoc isn't a "consumer app"; it is the primary digital infrastructure integrated directly into the legacy backends of Tier-1 insurance companies and fortune 500 employers, covering 105 million+ lives. Teladoc is acting as the digital top-of-funnel engine for the world's largest retailer. If Voss pushes the narrative that Teladoc is effectively the outsourced digital brain of Walmart's entire healthcare footprint, the fair value shifts from a basic health multiple to an enterprise distribution premium. Additionally , we are in a structural gold rush for high-quality, legally compliant, longitudinal medical data to train vertical healthcare AI models. Large technology hyperscalers and pharmaceutical giants cannot simply scrape the internet for this; they need structured clinical inputs. Teladoc sits on one of the largest de-identified virtual medical datasets on earth. From the activist playbook , we’ll see Voss demand the immediate creation of a Data & Diagnostics Licensing Division, transforming a legacy liability into an incredibly high-margin, pure-software data asset that requires zero human clinician hours to scale. Chuck is doing great work and deserves credi5 for the Teledoc turnaround but it will be Travis Cocke who will be responsible for a share price way beyond your $15 valuation.
