Is There More Growth In Store For ManTech International's (NASDAQ:MANT) Returns On Capital?
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So on that note, ManTech International (NASDAQ:MANT) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for ManTech International:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.086 = US$157m ÷ (US$2.2b - US$368m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).
Therefore, ManTech International has an ROCE of 8.6%. On its own, that's a low figure but it's around the 9.8% average generated by the IT industry.

So How Is ManTech International's ROCE Trending?
Even though ROCE is still low in absolute terms, it's good to see it's heading in the right direction. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 8.6%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 41% more capital is being employed now too. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
