Jet.AI Inc. (NASDAQ:JTAI) May Have Run Too Fast Too Soon With Recent 54% Price Plummet
Jet.AI Inc. (NASDAQ:JTAI) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 54% share price drop in the last month. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 50% loss during that time.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, Jet.AI may still be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 27.5x, since almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios under 4.6x and even P/S lower than 2x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

What Does Jet.AI's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
With revenue growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Jet.AI has been doing very well. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to outperform the wider market, which has seemingly got people interested in the stock. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.
Although there are no analyst estimates available for Jet.AI, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Jet.AI?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Jet.AI's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, we see the company's revenues grew exponentially. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been anywhere near as strong with three-year revenue growth being relatively non-existent overall. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 13% shows it's noticeably less attractive.
With this in mind, we find it worrying that Jet.AI's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
The Final Word
Jet.AI's shares may have suffered, but its P/S remains high. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
The fact that Jet.AI currently trades on a higher P/S relative to the industry is an oddity, since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. When we see slower than industry revenue growth but an elevated P/S, there's considerable risk of the share price declining, sending the P/S lower. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.
