Iris Energy (NASDAQ:IREN) adds US$18m to market cap in the past 7 days, though investors from a year ago are still down 81%
It is doubtless a positive to see that the Iris Energy Limited (NASDAQ:IREN) share price has gained some 97% in the last three months. But that isn't much consolation for the painful drop we've seen in the last year. To wit, the stock has dropped 81% over the last year. Arguably, the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. The real question is whether the company can turn around its fortunes. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.
While the stock has risen 14% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

Because Iris Energy made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
Iris Energy grew its revenue by 60% over the last year. That's a strong result which is better than most other loss making companies. So on the face of it we're really surprised to see the share price down 81% over twelve months. Something weird is definitely impacting the stock price; we'd venture the company has destroyed value somehow. What is clear is that the market is not judging the company on its revenue growth right now. Of course, markets do over-react so share price drop may be too harsh.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. A Different Perspective
Iris Energy shareholders are down 81% for the year, even worse than the market loss of 12%. There's no doubt that's a disappointment, but the stock may well have fared better in a stronger market. Putting aside the last twelve months, it's good to see the share price has rebounded by 97%, in the last ninety days. Let's just hope this isn't the widely-feared 'dead cat bounce' (which would indicate further declines to come). While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 4 warning signs for Iris Energy (1 is a bit unpleasant) that you should be aware of.
