There's No Escaping Expensify, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:EXFY) Muted Revenues Despite A 25% Share Price Rise

Those holding Expensify, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXFY) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 25% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. But the last month did very little to improve the 76% share price decline over the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Expensify may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.2x and even P/S higher than 12x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Expensify Has Been Performing

Expensify hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Expensify's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 11%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 71% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 3.4% each year as estimated by the seven analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 15% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we can see why Expensify is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Final Word

Shares in Expensify have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We've established that Expensify maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
