8x8, Inc. (NASDAQ:EGHT) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 26%
To the annoyance of some shareholders, 8x8, Inc. (NASDAQ:EGHT) shares are down a considerable 26% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 25% share price drop.
After such a large drop in price, 8x8 may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, considering almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.6x and even P/S higher than 10x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Has 8x8 Performed Recently?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, 8x8's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like 8x8's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 2.2% decrease to the company's top line. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 19% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 0.5% during the coming year according to the nine analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 19% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we can see why 8x8 is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From 8x8's P/S?
Having almost fallen off a cliff, 8x8's share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that 8x8 maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
Having said that, be aware 8x8 is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
