As eGain (NASDAQ:EGAN) spikes 11% this past week, investors may now be noticing the company's three-year earnings growth
eGain Corporation (NASDAQ:EGAN) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 23% in the last month. But that doesn't help the fact that the three year return is less impressive. Truth be told the share price declined 37% in three years and that return, Dear Reader, falls short of what you could have got from passive investing with an index fund.
The recent uptick of 11% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Although the share price is down over three years, eGain actually managed to grow EPS by 5.2% per year in that time. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Or else the company was over-hyped in the past, and so its growth has disappointed.
Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
Revenue is actually up 3.3% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. It's probably worth investigating eGain further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. A Different Perspective
Investors in eGain had a tough year, with a total loss of 24%, against a market gain of about 26%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 4% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that eGain is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
