The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From Domo, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:DOMO) Revenues Yet As Shares Tumble 32%
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Domo, Inc. (NASDAQ:DOMO) shares are down a considerable 32% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Longer-term, the stock has been solid despite a difficult 30 days, gaining 23% in the last year.
After such a large drop in price, Domo may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x, considering almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.9x and even P/S higher than 11x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Domo Has Been Performing
Domo could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Domo's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 6.4% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 6.2% per year as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 31% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Domo's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What We Can Learn From Domo's P/S?
Shares in Domo have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Domo maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Domo (of which 1 is a bit unpleasant!) you should know about.
