Domo, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:DOMO) Low P/S No Reason For Excitement

You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x Domo, Inc. (NASDAQ:DOMO) is definitely a stock worth checking out, seeing as almost half of all the Software companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.6x and even P/S above 11x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has Domo Performed Recently?

With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Domo has been relatively sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

Domo's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 6.5% gain to the company's revenues. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 60% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 1.2% as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 15% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Domo's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What Does Domo's P/S Mean For Investors?

While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Domo's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
