Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.

So, the natural question for BSQUARE (NASDAQ:BSQR) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

Does BSQUARE Have A Long Cash Runway?

A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. In March 2023, BSQUARE had US$34m in cash, and was debt-free. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$5.2m. That means it had a cash runway of about 6.5 years as of March 2023. While this is only one measure of its cash burn situation, it certainly gives us the impression that holders have nothing to worry about. How Well Is BSQUARE Growing?

BSQUARE actually ramped up its cash burn by a whopping 84% in the last year, which shows it is boosting investment in the business. While that's concerning on it's own, the fact that operating revenue was actually down 13% over the same period makes us positively tremulous. Considering both these metrics, we're a little concerned about how the company is developing. In reality, this article only makes a short study of the company's growth data. You can take a look at how BSQUARE has developed its business over time by checking this visualization of its revenue and earnings history.

How Easily Can BSQUARE Raise Cash?

BSQUARE seems to be in a fairly good position, in terms of cash burn, but we still think it's worthwhile considering how easily it could raise more money if it wanted to. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).

BSQUARE's cash burn of US$5.2m is about 21% of its US$25m market capitalisation. That's not insignificant, and if the company had to sell enough shares to fund another year's growth at the current share price, you'd likely witness fairly costly dilution.

How Risky Is BSQUARE's Cash Burn Situation?

Even though its increasing cash burn makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought BSQUARE's cash runway was relatively promising. Cash burning companies are always on the riskier side of things, but after considering all of the factors discussed in this short piece, we're not too worried about its rate of cash burn.
