Do MKS Instruments's (NASDAQ:MKSI) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like MKS Instruments (NASDAQ:MKSI). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Fast Is MKS Instruments Growing?
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. MKS Instruments managed to grow EPS by 11% per year, over three years. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that MKS Instruments is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 5.0 percentage points to 25%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

While we live in the present moment at all times, there's no doubt in my mind that the future matters more than the past. So why not check this interactive chart depicting future EPS estimates, for MKS Instruments?
Are MKS Instruments Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$8.0b company like MKS Instruments. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. To be specific, they have US$35m worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Despite being just 0.4% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.
Does MKS Instruments Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One positive for MKS Instruments is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. Now, you could try to make up your mind on MKS Instruments by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
