The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From Signet Jewelers Limited's (NYSE:SIG) Earnings Yet As Shares Tumble 29%

To the annoyance of some shareholders, Signet Jewelers Limited (NYSE:SIG) shares are down a considerable 29% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 46% in that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, given about half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 19x, you may still consider Signet Jewelers as a highly attractive investment with its 4.9x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.

Signet Jewelers certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Signet Jewelers' Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Signet Jewelers' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 10% gain to the company's bottom line. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen an unpleasant 14% overall drop in EPS. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to slump, contracting by 26% during the coming year according to the six analysts following the company. With the market predicted to deliver 15% growth , that's a disappointing outcome.

In light of this, it's understandable that Signet Jewelers' P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.

What We Can Learn From Signet Jewelers' P/E?

Signet Jewelers' P/E looks about as weak as its stock price lately. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Signet Jewelers' analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
