PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:PDD) Shares Fly 26% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth
PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:PDD) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 26% share price jump in the last month. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 2.9% isn't as attractive.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, PDD Holdings may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 12.2x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 19x and even P/E's higher than 33x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
PDD Holdings certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is PDD Holdings' Growth Trending?
PDD Holdings' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 126% last year. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 5.4% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 11% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that PDD Holdings' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Final Word
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift PDD Holdings' P/E close to the market median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of PDD Holdings' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
