Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in PDD Holdings (NASDAQ:PDD). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

How Fast Is PDD Holdings Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years PDD Holdings' earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. In impressive fashion, PDD Holdings' EPS grew from CN¥34.73 to CN¥77.96, over the previous 12 months. It's not often a company can achieve year-on-year growth of 124%. Shareholders will be hopeful that this is a sign of the company reaching an inflection point.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that PDD Holdings is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 5.4 percentage points to 28%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in our book.

Are PDD Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since PDD Holdings has a market capitalisation of US$139b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth CN¥45b. Coming in at 32% of the business, that holding gives insiders a lot of influence, and plenty of reason to generate value for shareholders. So there is opportunity here to invest in a company whose management have tangible incentives to deliver.
