We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Spirit Realty Capital, Inc. (NYSE:SRC).

What Is Insider Buying?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

Spirit Realty Capital Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when President Jackson Hsieh bought US$299k worth of shares at a price of US$29.31 per share. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of US$42.74. Because it occurred at a lower valuation, it doesn't tell us much about whether insiders might find today's price attractive.
