With EPS Growth And More, CubeSmart (NYSE:CUBE) Is Interesting
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like CubeSmart (NYSE:CUBE). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is CubeSmart Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
Even with very modest growth rates, a company will usually do well if it improves earnings per share (EPS) year after year. So EPS growth can certainly encourage an investor to take note of a stock. CubeSmart has grown its trailing twelve month EPS from US$0.83 to US$0.91, in the last year. That amounts to a small improvement of 9.6%.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. I note that CubeSmart's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. While we note CubeSmart's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 12% to US$740m. That's progress.

Are CubeSmart Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$10b company like CubeSmart. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. With a whopping US$62m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. That's certainly enough to make me think that management will be very focussed on long term growth.
It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalizations over US$8.0b, like CubeSmart, the median CEO pay is around US$11m.
CubeSmart offered total compensation worth US$6.0m to its CEO in the year to . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.
Should You Add CubeSmart To Your Watchlist?
One positive for CubeSmart is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. Earnings growth might be the main game for CubeSmart, but the fun does not stop there. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, I'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for CubeSmart (1 is significant!) that you need to be mindful of.
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
